Once again we are writing this a day late as National Parks have not yet got to grips with Wi-Fi...
After awaking under a canopy of trees with the sun shining into our tent the day was already off to a good start. Ollie raced around and around our site, running up to people on bikes and bounding up to other dogs! We had breakfast, packed up the truck and set off to South Dakota - today was to be a long, long driving day.
We took up our positions, Ollie in the back on his bed and off we went. Our route took us along southern Minnesota along a very, very straight road so straight that Ollie even got bored driving and climbed in to the back to join us on his bed...
and in to South Dakota home of: The Corn Palace, Mitchell, SD. We managed to resist the urge to take a free tour and sample some freshly made corn syrup.
The crossing of the Missouri River was a change of scenery - there was nothing, nothing, nothing - huge river, landscape, green and verdant to nothing, nothing, nothing.
Once again we witnessed a lovely sunset over (another) corn field.
Contrary to it's appearance on the map - there actually is a lot less in SD than it appears, there are a lot of (straight) roads to nowhere (except corn fields.)
Our timing in to The Badlands, NP couldn't have been better - we turned into the park under a moon so bright we didn't really need our headlamps. It looked like we were on the moon, looking at the moon as the spires loomed out in to the prairie as far as the eye could see.
We found our camp site and before you could say Is That Fried Chicken, Steve? we had the tent up, appetisers ready with a small side salad and were eating our chicken (120 millions years ago) at the bottom of the sea under the moon.
Vermont plate sightings = 0
*** side note; we are actually on our way from Badlands National Park to Mt. Rushmore. There are some amazing photos to come.
